“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have [a]killed a man for wounding me,Even a young man [b]for hurting me.24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
A New Son
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him [c]Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him [d]Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 5
The Family of Adam
1 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot [e]Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died.
12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

Judges 3:12-31
New King James Version
Ehud
12 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and [a]defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms. 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
15 But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back from the [b]stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
26 Now Ehud escaped while they were hesitating, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah. 27 And [i]when he arrived, he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was [j]leading them. 28 Then he said to them, “Pursue them, for the Lord has handed your enemies the Moabites over to you.” So they went down after him and took control of the crossing places of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross. 29 They struck and killed about ten thousand Moabites at that time, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was at rest for eighty years.
Shamgar Saves Israel
31 Now after him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck and killed six hundred Philistines with an [k]oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.
Luke 9:51-62
Exacting Discipleship
57 As they were going on the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Matthew 8:18-22
Discipleship Tested
18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. 19 Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 And another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

A Cry For Defence
Twenty-five hundred years ago the psalmist Asaph called on God to defend his nation Israel against those trying to destroy it. He wanted God's action, his involvement, his fire, tempest and terror; he wanted the faces of Israel's enemies to be covered in shame and dismay. Why? So the whole world would know the Lord.
Prayer: Lord, I pray for the safety and peace of Jerusalem today. We pray that the enemies of Israel will be thrown into confusion and disarray. I pray you will work in the hearts, lives, and political systems there ... and through it all, may your name be glorified in all the earth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture
Jeremiah 21
8 “Now you shall say to this people, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes out and [c]defects to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be as a prize to him. 10 For I have set My face against this city for adversity and not for good,” says the Lord. “It shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.” ’
Message to the House of David
11 “And concerning the house of the king of Judah, say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, 12 O house of David! Thus says the Lord:
“Execute[d] judgment in the morning; And deliver him who is plunderedOut of the hand of the oppressor,Lest My fury go forth like fireAnd burn so that no one can quench it,Because of the evil of your doings.
13 “Behold, I am against you, O [e]inhabitant of the valley,And rock of the plain,” says the Lord,“Who say, ‘Who shall come down against us?Or who shall enter our dwellings?’14 But I will punish you according to the fruit of your [f]doings,” says the Lord;“I will kindle a fire in its forest,And it shall devour all things around it.” ’ ”
Jeremiah 22
3 Thus says the Lord: “Execute[g] judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. 4 For if you indeed do this thing, then shall enter the gates of this house, riding on horses and in chariots, accompanied by servants and people, kings who sit on the throne of David. 5 But if you will not [h]hear these words, I swear by Myself,” says the Lord, “that this house shall become a desolation.” ’ ”
8 And many nations will pass by this city; and everyone will say to his neighbor, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this great city?’ 9 Then they will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshiped other gods and served them.’ ”
13 “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousnessAnd his [j]chambers by injustice,Who uses his neighbor’s service without wagesAnd gives him nothing for his work,14 Who says, ‘I will build myself a wide house with spacious [k]chambers,And cut out windows for it,Paneling it with cedarAnd painting it with vermilion.’
15 “Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar?Did not your father eat and drink,And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him.16 He [l]judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.17 “Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness,For shedding innocent blood,And practicing oppression and violence.”
2 Thessalonians 1
God’s Final Judgment and Glory
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 4 so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and [a]tribulations that you endure, 5 which is manifest[b] evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; 6 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with [c]tribulation those who trouble you, 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who [d]believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm 83
1 God, do not remain quiet;Do not be silent and, God, do not be still. 2 For behold, Your enemies make an uproar,And those who hate You have [a]exalted themselves. 3 They make shrewd plans against Your people,And [b]conspire together against Your [c]treasured ones. 4 They have said, “Come, and let’s wipe them out [d]as a nation,So that the name of Israel will no longer be remembered.” 5 For they have [e]conspired together with one mind; They make a covenant against You: 6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,Moab and the Hagrites; 7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8 Assyria also has joined them; They have become [f]a help to the children of Lot. Selah
9 Deal with them as with Midian,As with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon, 10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,Who became like dung for the ground. 11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,And all their leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna, 12 Who said, “Let’s possess for ourselvesThe pastures of God.”
13 My God, make them like the [g]whirling dust,Like chaff before the wind. 14 Like fire that burns the forest,And like a flame that sets the mountains on fire, 15 So pursue them with Your heavy gale,And terrify them with Your storm. 16 Fill their faces with dishonor,So that they will seek Your name, Lord. 17 May they be ashamed and dismayed forever,And may they be humiliated and perish, 18 So that they will know that You alone, whose name is the Lord,Are the Most High over all the earth.
Proverbs 25:11-14
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver, Is a word spoken at [a]the proper time.
12 Like [b]an earring of gold and a jewelry piece of fine gold, Is a wise person who offers rebukes to a listening ear.
13 Like the cold of snow in the [c]time of harvest Is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
For he refreshes the soul of his masters.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain Is a person who boasts [d]of his gifts falsely.
