Torah: Lech-Lecha, 1st Portion Bereshit (Genesis) 12:1-13
Complete Jewish Bible
Parashah 3: Lekh L’kha (Get yourself out) 12:1–17:27
1 Now Adonai said to Avram, “Get yourself out of your country, away from your kinsmen and away from your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you are to be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
4 So Avram went, as Adonai had said to him, and Lot went with him. Avram was 75 years old when he left Haran. 5 Avram took his wife Sarai, his brother’s son Lot, and all their possessions which they had accumulated, as well as the people they had acquired in Haran; then they set out for the land of Kena‘an and entered the land of Kena‘an.
6 Avram passed through the land to the place called Sh’khem, to the oak of Moreh. The Kena‘ani were then in the land. 7 Adonai appeared to Avram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to Adonai, who had appeared to him.
8 He left that place, went to the hill east of Beit-El and pitched his tent. With Beit-El to the west and ‘Ai to the east, he built an altar there and called on the name of Adonai. 9 Then Avram traveled on, continuing toward the Negev. 10 But there was a famine in the land, so Avram went down into Egypt to stay there, because the famine in the land was severe.
11 When he came close to Egypt and was about to enter, he said to Sarai his wife, “Here now, I know that you are a good-looking woman; 12 so that when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife,’ and kill me but keep you alive. 13 Please say that you are my sister, so that it will go well with me for your sake, and so that I will stay alive because of you.”

Judges 11
Jephthah, the Ninth Judge
1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a [a]valiant warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. And Gilead had fathered Jephthah. 2 Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob; and worthless men gathered [b]around Jephthah, and they went [c]wherever he did.
Jephthah’s Tragic Vow
29 Now the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed hand over to me the sons of Ammon, 31 then whatever comes out the doors of my house to meet me when I return [j]safely from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.” 32 So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord handed them over to him. 33 He [k]inflicted a very great defeat on them from Aroer [l]to the entrance of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.

Your faith, your integrity, and the way in which you follow the Lord has a profound impact on your family. Young Timothy had an advantage of being raised by a godly mother and grandmother. What stories did they pass on to him? What life experiences or tests had they faced and shared with him? We can only imagine, but their godly character and instruction somehow made it to the ears of the apostle Paul.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the people you have brought into my life as godly influences. They are precious examples. Their care for me is humbling. I want to be a vehicle of godly influences as well. Help me to pass along this heritage to the next generation, just as Eunice and Lois did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Scripture
Jeremiah 39
Jeremiah Spared
11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave orders regarding Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard, saying, 12 “Take him and [h]look after him, and do not do anything harmful to him, but rather deal with him just as he tells you.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard sent word, along with Nebushazban the [i]Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the [j]Rab-mag, and all the leading officers of the king of Babylon; 14 they even sent word and took Jeremiah out of the courtyard of the guardhouse and entrusted him to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he stayed among the people.
15 Now the word of the Lord had come to Jeremiah while he was confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse, saying, 16 “Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says: “Behold, I am going to bring My words on this city for disaster and not for [k]prosperity; and they will take place before you on that day. 17 But I will save you on that day,” declares the Lord, “and you will not be handed over to the men of whom you are afraid. 18 For I will assuredly rescue you, and you will not fall by the sword; but you will have your own life as plunder, because you have trusted in Me,” declares the Lord.’”
Jeremiah 40
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan captain of the bodyguard had released him from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all the exiles of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. 2 Now the captain of the bodyguard had taken Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God promised this disaster against this place; 3 and the Lord has brought it and done just as He promised. Because you people sinned against the Lord and did not listen to His voice, this thing has happened to you. 4 But now, behold, I am setting you free today from the chains that are on your hands. If [l]you would prefer to come with me to Babylon, come along, and I will [m]look after you; but if [n]you would prefer not to come with me to Babylon, [o]do not come. Look, the whole land is before you; go wherever it seems good and right for you to go.” 5 As [p]Jeremiah was still not going back, [q]he said, “Go on back then to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people; or else go anywhere it seems right for you to go.” So the captain of the bodyguard gave him a ration and a gift, and let him go. 6 Then Jeremiah went to Mizpah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam and stayed with him among the people who were left in the land.
2 Timothy 1
Timothy’s Faith and Heritage
3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the [b]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Not Ashamed of the Gospel
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher [c]of the Gentiles. 12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.
Be Loyal to the Faith
13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
Psalm 91
New American Standard Bible
Security of One Who Trusts in the Lord.
1 One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,My God, in whom I trust!”
3 For it is He who rescues you from the net of the trapperAnd from the deadly plague.
4 He will cover you with His pinions,And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall.
5 You will not be afraid of the terror by night,Or of the arrow that flies by day;
6 Of the plague that [a]stalks in darkness,Or of the destruction that devastates at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your sideAnd ten thousand at your right hand,But it shall not approach you.
8 You will only look on with your eyesAnd see the retaliation against the wicked.
9 [b]For you have made the Lord, my refuge,The Most High, your dwelling place.
10 No evil will happen to you,Nor will any plague come near your [c]tent.
11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you, To protect you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will lift you up,So that you do not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will walk upon the lion and cobra,You will trample the young lion and the [d]serpent.
14 “Because he has loved Me, I will save him;I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
15 He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;I will be with him in [e]trouble;I will rescue him and honor him.
16 I will satisfy him with [f]a long life, And [g]show him My salvation.”
Proverbs 26
Honor Is Not Fitting for a Fool
1 As snow in summer and rain in harvest,So honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow,So a curse without cause shall not alight.
