Day 311 Readings
Torah: 3rd Portion Bereshit (Genesis) 24:10-26
Genesis 24:10-26
New American Standard Bible
10 Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and went out with a variety of good things of his master’s in his hand; so he set out and went to [a]Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water [b]when it was evening, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, please [c]grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the [d]spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; 14 now may it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and [e]who answers, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’—may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
Rebekah Is Chosen
15 And it came about, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had [f]had relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar.” 18 And she said, “Drink, my lord”; then she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 Now when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. 21 Meanwhile, the man was taking a close look at her [g]in silence, to find out whether the Lord had made his journey successful or not.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a [h]half-shekel, and two bracelets for her [i]wrists weighing ten shekels in gold, 23 and he said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room for us to stay overnight at your father’s house?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 Again she said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to stay overnight.” 26 Then the man bowed low and worshiped the Lord.

1 Samuel 2
Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving
1 Then Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;My [a]horn is exalted in the Lord,My mouth [b]speaks boldly against my enemies,Because I rejoice in Your salvation.2 There is no one holy like the Lord,Indeed, there is no one besides You,Nor is there any rock like our God.3 Do not go on [c]boasting so very proudly,Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; For the Lord is a God of knowledge,And [d]with Him actions are weighed.4 The bows of the mighty are broken to pieces,But those who have stumbled strap on strength.5 Those who were full hire themselves out for bread,But those who were hungry cease to be hungry.Even the infertile woman gives birth to seven,But she who has many children languishes.6 The Lord puts to death and makes alive; He brings down to [e]Sheol and brings up.7 The Lord makes poor and rich;He humbles, He also exalts.8 He raises the poor from the dust,He lifts the needy from the garbage heapTo seat them with nobles,And He gives them a seat of honor as an inheritance; For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,And He set the world on them.9 He watches over the feet of His godly ones,But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; For not by might shall a person prevail.10 Those who contend with the Lord will be terrified;Against them He will thunder in the heavens,The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; And He will give strength to His king,And will exalt the [f]horn of His anointed.”
11 Then Elkanah went to his home at Ramah. But the boy continued to attend to the service of the Lord before Eli the priest.
Samuel before the Lord as a Boy
18 Now Samuel was ministering before the Lord, as a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19 And his mother would make for him a little robe and bring it up to him from year to year when she would come up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you [l]children from this woman in place of the [m]one she requested of the Lord.” And they went to their own [n]home.
21 [o]The Lord indeed visited Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up [p]before the Lord.
26 Now the boy Samuel was continuing to grow and to be in favor both with the Lord and with people.
27 Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not indeed reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house? 28 Did I not choose them from all the tribes of Israel to be My priests, to go up to My altar, to burn incense, to carry an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the fire offerings of the sons of Israel? 29 Why are you [q]showing contempt for My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded for My dwelling, and why are you honoring your sons above Me, by making yourselves fat with the [r]choicest of every offering of My people Israel?’ 30 Therefore the Lord God of Israel declares, ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father was to walk before Me forever’; but now the Lord declares, ‘Far be it from Me—for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me will be insignificant. 31 Behold, the days are coming when I will eliminate your [s]strength and the [t]strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 And you will look at the distress of My dwelling, in spite of all the good that [u]I do for Israel; and there will never be an old man in your house. 33 Yet I will not cut off every man of yours from My altar, [v]so that your eyes will fail from weeping and your soul grieve, and all the [w]increase of your house will die [x]in the prime of life. 34 And this will be the sign to you which will come in regard to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: on the same day both of them will die. 35 But I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and My soul; and I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed always. 36 And everyone who is left in your house will come to bow down to him for a [y]silver coin or a loaf of bread and say, “Please [z]assign me to one of the priest’s offices so that I may eat a piece of bread.”’”
Luke 12
Greed Denounced
13 Now someone [j]in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But He said to him, “[k]You there—who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over the two of you?” 15 But He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one is affluent does his life consist of his possessions.” 16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. 17 And he began thinking to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will store all my grain and my goods there. 19 And I will say to [l]myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years to come; relax, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night [m]your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’ 21 Such is the one who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich in relation to God.”
22 And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I tell you, [n]do not worry about your [o]life, as to what you are to eat; nor for your body, as to what you are to wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, that they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! 25 And which of you by worrying can add a [p]day to his [q]life’s span? 26 Therefore if you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about the other things? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither labor nor [r]spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 28 Now if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You of little faith! 29 And do not [s]seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For [t]all these things are what the nations of the world [u]eagerly seek; and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But [v]seek His kingdom, and these things will be [w]provided to you. 32 [x]Do not be afraid, little flock, because your Father has chosen to give you the kingdom.
33 “Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor does a moth destroy. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
365 Daily Kingdom Living
The New Covenant
The first covenant means The Old Testament. A second means The New Testament. So why did God look for a new covenant? It was not because there was anything wrong with the Old Testament. It is because God knows the weaknesses of mankind and that no one can be righteous before Him by meeting the requirements of The Law. God so loves the world, so He provides a new covenant, a simple and easy way to bring Heaven on earth through His Son Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Jesus Lord, thank you for your sacrifice, bearing all our sins so that we can be cleansed. Thank you for your new covenant so that we may have life, and have it to the full, through you. We have a new relationship with you. We have your kingdom come to us and in us. Amen.
Scripture
Ezekiel 17
16 ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke—with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. 17 Nor will Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company do anything in the war, when they heap up a siege mound and build a [c]wall to cut off many persons. 18 Since he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and in fact gave[d] his hand and still did all these things, he shall not escape.’ ”
19 Therefore thus says the Lord God: “As I live, surely My oath which he despised, and My covenant which he broke, I will recompense on his own head. 20 I will spread My net over him, and he shall be taken in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and try him there for the [e]treason which he committed against Me. 21 All his [f]fugitives with all his troops shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered to every wind; and you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Israel Exalted at Last
22 Thus says the Lord God: “I will take also one of the highest branches of the high cedar and set it out. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and will plant it on a high and prominent mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a majestic cedar. Under it will dwell birds of every sort; in the shadow of its branches they will dwell. 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the Lord, have brought down the high tree and exalted the low tree, dried up the green tree and made the dry tree flourish; I, the Lord, have spoken and have done it.”
Hebrews 8
New King James Version
The New Priestly Service
1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the [a]sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. 4 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.
A New Covenant
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins [b]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Psalm 106:13-31
New King James Version
13 They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel,
14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,And tested God in the desert.
15 And He gave them their request,But sent leanness into their soul.
16 When they envied Moses in the camp,And Aaron the saint of the Lord,
17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan,And covered the faction of Abiram.
18 A fire was kindled in their company; The flame burned up the wicked.
19 They made a calf in Horeb,And worshiped the molded image.
20 Thus they changed their gloryInto the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They forgot God their Savior,Who had done great things in Egypt,
22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,Awesome things by the Red Sea.
23 Therefore He said that He would destroy them,Had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach,To turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them.
24 Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe His word,
25 But complained in their tents,And did not heed the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them,To [a]overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 To [b]overthrow their descendants among the [c]nations,And to scatter them in the lands.
28 They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor,And ate sacrifices [d]made to the dead.
29 Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds,And the plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,And the plague was stopped.
31 And that was accounted to him for righteousness To all generations forevermore.
Proverbs 27:7-9
New American Standard Bible
7 A satisfied [a]person [b]despises honey,But to a hungry [c]person any bitter thing is sweet.
8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest,So is a person who wanders from his [d]home.
9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad,And a [e]person’s advice is sweet to his friend.
Proverbs 27:7
