Shabbat Ki Tavo (When You Enter)
Deuteronomy 26:1–29:9 (8); Isaiah 60:1–22
“When you have entered [ki tavo] the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance ... take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for His name.” (Deuteronomy 26:1–2)
Ki Tavo, 7th Portion Devarim (Deuteronomy) 29:1-8
2 Moses called together all the people of Israel and said to them, “You saw for yourselves what the Lord did to the king of Egypt, to his officials, and to his entire country. 3 You saw the terrible plagues, the miracles, and the great wonders that the Lord performed. 4 But to this very day he has not let you understand what you have experienced.
Haftarah Ki Tavo: Yesha‘yahu (Isaiah) 60:1–22
4 Raise your eyes and look around: they are all assembling and coming to you;
your sons are coming from far off, your daughters being carried on their nurses’ hips.
5 Then you will see and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with delight;
for the riches of the seas will be brought to you, the wealth of nations will come to you.
6 Caravans of camels will cover your land, young camels from Midyan and ‘Eifah,
10 “Foreigners will build up your walls, And theirkings will serve you;
For in Mywrath I struck you, And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 Yourgates will be open continually; They will not be closed day or night,
So thatpeoplemaybring you the wealth of the nations, Withtheir kings led in procession.
all of them coming from Sh’va, bringing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises ofAdonai. 12 For the nation or kingdom that won’t serve you will perish; yes, those nations will be utterly destroyed.
19 No longer will you have the sun for light by day, Nor will the moon give you light for brightness;But you will have the Lord as an everlasting light,And your God as your [e]glory.20 Your sun will no longer set,Nor will your moon wane;For you will have the Lord as an everlasting light,And the days of your mourning will be over.21 Then all your people will be righteous;They will possess the land forever,The branch of My planting,The work of My hands,That I may be glorified. 22 The smallest one will become a thousand,And the least one a mighty nation.I, the Lord, will bring it about quickly in its time.”
B’rit Hadashah suggested readings for Parashah Ki Tavo:
Mattityahu (Matthew) 13:1–23;
13 Here is why I speak to them in parables: they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. 14 That is, in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Yesha‘yahu which says,
‘You will keep on hearing but never understand,and keep on seeing but never perceive,15 because the heart of this people has become dull —with their ears they barely hear,and their eyes they have closed,so as not to see with their eyes,hear with their ears,understand with their heart,and do t’shuvah,so that I could heal them.’
16 But you, how blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear! 17 Yes indeed! I tell you that many a prophet and many a tzaddik longed to see the things you are seeing but did not see them, and to hear the things you are hearing but did not hear them.
Luke 21:1–4;
4 For they, out of their wealth, have contributed money they could easily spare; but she, out of her poverty, has given all she had to live on.”
Acts 28:17–31;
25 And when they disagreed with one another, they began leaving after Paul said one parting statement: “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, 26 saying,
‘Go to this people and say,“[h]You will keep on hearing, and will not understand;And [i]you will keep on seeing, and will not perceive;27 For the hearts of this people have become [j]insensitive,And with their ears they [k]hardly hear,And they have closed their eyes;Otherwise they might see with their eyes,And hear with their ears,And understand with their heart and return,And I would heal them.”’
28 Therefore, let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen.”[
Romans 11:1–15;
5 It’s the same way in the present age: there is a remnant, chosen by grace. 6 (Now if it is by grace, it is accordingly not based on legalistic works; if it were otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.) 7 What follows is that Isra’el has not attained the goal for which she is striving. The ones chosen have obtained it, but the rest have been made stonelike, 8 just as the Tanakh says,
“God has given them a spirit of dullness —eyes that do not seeand ears that do not hear,right down to the present day.”
11 “In that case, I say, isn’t it that they have stumbled with the result that they have permanently fallen away?” Heaven forbid! Quite the contrary, it is by means of their stumbling that the deliverance has come to the Gentiles, in order to provoke them to jealousy.[g] 12 Moreover, if their stumbling is bringing riches to the world — that is, if Isra’el’s being placed temporarily in a condition less favored than that of the Gentiles is bringing riches to the latter — how much greater riches will Isra’el in its fullness bring them!
1 Peter 2:1–25
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Honor Authority
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent [q]by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 15 For [r]such is the will of God, that by doing right you silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Act as free people, and [s]do not use your freedom as a [t]covering for evil, but use it as bond-servants of God. 17 Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the [u]king.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are [v]harsh. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person endures [w]grief when suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God.
Christ Is Our Example
21 For you have been called for this purpose, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in His steps, 22 He who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 [x]and while being abusively insulted, He did not insult in return; while suffering, He did not threaten, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself [y]brought our sins in His body up on the [z]cross, so that we might die to [aa]sin and live for righteousness; by His [ab]wounds you were healed. 25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and [ac]Guardian of your souls.

Psalm 117
A Psalm of Praise.
1 Praise the Lord, all nations;Sing His praises, all peoples!2 For His mercy toward us is [a]great,And the [b]truth of the Lord is everlasting.[c]Praise [d]the Lord!
Deuteronomy 16:9-17:13
Deuteronomy 16
Justice Must Be Administered
18 “You shall appoint judges and officers in all your [b]gates, which the Lord your God gives you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with just judgment. 19 You shall not pervert justice; you shall not [c]show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and [d]twists the words of the righteous. 20 You shall follow what is altogether just, that you may live and inherit the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
21 “You shall not plant for yourself an [m]Asherah of any kind of tree beside the altar of the Lord your God, which you shall make for yourself. 22 And you shall not set up for yourself a memorial stone, which the Lord your God hates.
Deuteronomy 17
8 “If a case is too difficult for you to decide, between [v]one kind of homicide or another, between [w]one kind of lawsuit or another, and between [x]one kind of assault or another, that are cases of dispute in your [y]courts, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the Lord your God chooses. 9 So you shall come to the Levitical priests or the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall inquire of them and they will declare to you the [z]verdict. 10 Then you shall act in accordance with the [aa]terms of the verdict which they declare to you from that place which the Lord chooses; and you shall be careful to act in accordance with everything that they instruct you to do.
Romans 15
1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not just please ourselves. 2 Each of us is to please his neighbor [a]for his good, to his edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written: “The taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on Me.” 4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 Now may the God [b]who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one purpose and one [c]voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
12 Again Isaiah says,
“There shall come the root of Jesse,And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles,In Him will the Gentiles hope.”
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture
Ecclesiastes 1
13 I determined that I would examine and study all the things that are done in this world.
God has laid a miserable fate upon us. 14 I have seen everything done in this world, and I tell you, it is all useless. It is like chasing the wind. 15 You can't straighten out what is crooked; you can't count things that aren't there.
Ecclesiastes 2
17 Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
24 The best thing we can do is eat and drink and enjoy what we have earned. And yet, I realized that even this comes from God. 25 How else could you have anything to eat or enjoy yourself at all? 26 God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness to those who please him, but he makes sinners work, earning and saving, so that what they get can be given to those who please him. It is all useless. It is like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 3
1 Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.
2 He sets the time for birth and the time for death,the time for planting and the time for pulling up,3 the time for killing and the time for healing,the time for tearing down and the time for building.4 He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy,the time for mourning and the time for dancing,5 the time for making love and the time for not making love,the time for kissing and the time for not kissing.6 He sets the time for finding and the time for losing,the time for saving and the time for throwing away,7 the time for tearing and the time for mending,the time for silence and the time for talk.8 He sets the time for love and the time for hate,the time for war and the time for peace.
9 What do we gain from all our work? 10 I know the heavy burdens that God has laid on us. 11 He has set the right time for everything. He has given us a desire to know the future, but never gives us the satisfaction of fully understanding what he does. 12 So I realized that all we can do is be happy and do the best we can while we are still alive. 13 All of us should eat and drink and enjoy what we have worked for. It is God's gift.
14 I know that everything God does will last forever. You can't add anything to it or take anything away from it. And one thing God does is to make us stand in awe of him. 15 Whatever happens or can happen has already happened before. God makes the same thing happen again and again.
Ecclesiastes 4
9 Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. 10 If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone and falls, it's just too bad, because there is no one to help him. 11 If it is cold, two can sleep together and stay warm, but how can you keep warm by yourself 12 Two people can resist an attack that would defeat one person alone. A rope made of three cords is hard to break.
Ecclesiastes 5
18 Here is what I have found out: the best thing we can do is eat and drink and enjoy what we have worked for during the short life that God has given us; this is our fate. 19 If God gives us wealth and property and lets us enjoy them, we should be grateful and enjoy what we have worked for. It is a gift from God. 20 Since God has allowed us to be happy, we will not worry too much about how short life is.
2 Corinthians 6:1-13
1 We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For He says:
“In an acceptable time I have heard you,And in the day of salvation I have helped you.”
Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
3 We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. 4 But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much [a]patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, 5 in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; 6 by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by [b]sincere love, 7 by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8 by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
Psalms 46
God, the Refuge of His People.
For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, [a]set to Alamoth. A Song.
1 God is our refuge and strength,A [b]very ready help in [c]trouble.2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth shakes And the mountains slip into the heart of the [d]sea;3 Though its waters roar and foam,Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make the city of God happy,The holy dwelling places of the Most High.5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved;God will help her [e]when morning dawns.6 The [f]nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered;He [g]raised His voice, the earth quaked.7 The Lord of armies is with us;The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,[h]Who has inflicted horrific events on the earth.9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;He burns the chariots with fire.10 “[i]Stop striving and know that I am God;I will be exalted among the [j]nations, I will be exalted on the earth.”11 The Lord of armies is with us;The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah
Proverbs 22:15
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.
